What is Chi (Qi)?
Pronounced "Chee", Chi or Qi is what is known as the vital energy or life force. This energy or force in the foundation to understanding Oriental Medicine and Eastern Philosophy.

One way of looking at Chi is seeing how it functions. Let’s look at this force as it manifests in the body. Chi is the life force within the body. It consists of energy derived at birth and also essences derived from food and air. Chi circulates throughout the body to enhance the flow of blood and controls vitality and many functions of the body. So Chi is really not one thing, it is energy that manifests in many ways. Chi can have different purposes or different sources and can be called several names like, central Chi, true Chi, good Chi, bad Chi, original Chi, etc.

One reason why we have a difficult time understanding what Chi is, is because we can’t see it, but you can feel it and see it’s functioning, like the wind.

There are pathways or channels with in the body in which this energy circulates. This movement or non-movement is our main focus in Acupuncture. If the Chi flows smoothly and unobstructed the body can improve and maintain good health. According to Chinese Medicine Theory, Acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from where it is excess. In this way, Acupuncture regulates and restores the harmonious energy balance of the body. Therefore, we can say that if there is no pain then there is free flow, and if there is pain then there is some type of blockage.

Many people wonder if Acupuncture treatment hurts. Most patients feel a slight sensation of heaviness but no pain. Most people find that during and after a treatment, they feel more relaxed and refreshed.
One of the strong points of Acupuncture is its ability to deal with pain, without the negative side effects of many pain medications. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine is not a replacement for western medicine, but gives us more options for living with less pain and greater well being.

It’s time that we bridge the gap between East and West and utilize the modalities of Chinese Medicine. Now that technology has become more advanced and we are able to see the subtleties of the body with more detail, the scientific community has considered Acupuncture as a viable treatment, but the main point of a medical method is that it clearly helps patients. Acupuncture has been helping people for many centuries, that is why the tradition continues.
